Assignment 14- Anne Douglas

Ah Thanksgiving. The holiday centered around binge eating and heated arguments about politics with relatives. What a day! All jokes aside, I love thanksgiving. I love the food, the traditions, the family. I'm fortunate enough to have plentiful food on our table and a wonderful family to share the day with, so who am I to complain?

A typical thanksgiving day in the Chambers family looks like this: That morning my mom, dad and I work out to help ourselves feel better about the excessive amount of mashed potatoes and pie we are about to consume. After that, we watch the parade and hastily prepare our dishes for our first meal of the day. Every year we eat two big thanksgiving meals- one in Winchester at my dad's mother's house, and one at our house with my mom's side of the family.

Around noon, we travel to Winchester and our festivities begin. At my grandmother's house we are greeted by our Gran, my 3 huge cousins, Luke, Thomas, and Ben, and my Aunt Susan and Uncle Kevin. We catch up, watch football, and then sit down for the first meal of the day. Following the meal we have several Thanksgiving traditions. My favorite tradition is that a group of us will walk around the neighborhood, and we reminisce of memories of our lives in the little town. Upon our arrival, my youngest cousin Ben is anxiously waiting for people to play with him. Usually, we either play a game of Trivial Pursuit from the 80's that my dad has memorized all the facts to, or we play some card game, our favorites being rummy and Spades. Overall, we have a lovely afternoon and very much enjoy spending quality time together.

After our afternoon of gluttony, my family prepares our stomachs for even more food. We travel back home and are greeted by my mom's side of the family. We then sit down to one more meal and enjoy some more family time.

Thanksgiving is a great holiday. Its a day to reflect on the blessings in your life, and spend time with the people you love. I am so incredibly fortunate, and days like this remind me not to take that for granted.
