Everyone has a right to believe in whichever religion they want. Everyone's religion should be respected. That religious freedom is protected by the government of the United States of America.
Unfortunately, sometimes people are unhappy with the decisions made by the very same United States government. Like when the Supreme Court ruled that gay marriage is okay.
How could they do that? Don't they know that it's against the religion of one-fifth of the American population? The government should be protecting my right, as a Catholic, to say that gay marriage should be illegal.
Many try to tell me that the Catholic church clearly teaches that its followers must love everyone. But that doesn't count if they're gay. Sleeping with someone of the same gender is against the Catholic religion so it must be put into law that any person attracted to their own gender cannot get married.
How can I be expected to live in a country who promised to protect my religion, but instead went against my religious beliefs?
