Assignment 17 - Trip Church

Over the break I saw The Greatest Showman.  Going in, I had no clue the movie was a musical.  The movie began with music, which I figured was just some sort of opening, establishing scene.  Then a bit later a little boy started singing a song, and that's when I realized.  This wouldn't have been a big deal - except I've never really been one for musicals, they just don't appeal to me.  But I sat through, and endured the songs.  If i looked past the music, which was objectively good (although sometimes repetitive), the movie itself was well done.  It was clearly designed for families, with it's not-so-subtle themes of hope and not judging others.  There were definitely  few instances were I lost any sense of immersion - some things were hard to believe - but those could be ignored when I realized how they were being used to affect the actual plot.  Most of the ridiculousness came during songs, so I was able to look past it.  Overall, this is a great movie for a family to go see, It wouldn't be my first choice for teenagers, or someone who dislikes musicals.
