Assignment 23 - Delaney

As some one who considers themselves a pretentious music nerd, playlists are so my thing. Rob Gordon’s got it right – making (good) playlists is truly an art. Personally, my thought process while playlist making mainly consists of considering how the mood of the songs flow together. If you don’t know, I have a large playlist of songs that I call the “meme playlist” that consists of songs such as “The Final Countdown,” “Mr. Brightside,” “Baby Come Back,” and “Party in the U.S.A.” The wide variety of music makes for a rough playlist. However, when I play this at parties, I change the random shuffled order so that the mood of the songs flows better.

I’ve decided to compile a “perfect” playlist for when you wake up and need a little help getting out of bed to face the world:

1)   “Castle by the Sea” by Tim Eriksen. I chose this song first because it’s a gentle acoustic Irish folk song. Even before the guitar begins, there’s about fifty seconds of soothing forest sounds. It’s perfect to calm your anger of having to wake up.
2)   “Up (bedroom mix)” from the Sing Street soundtrack. This one’s next because it still has that gentle, soft tone from “Castle by the Sea” yet it has a fuller presence due to the added element of the piano. This smooths the transition to the next song.
3)   “All I Have to do is Dream” by The Everly Brothers. Thanks to the fuller sound of the last song (compared to the first one), the electric guitar, drums, bass, double vocals, and faster tempo of this song fits with the mood flow. This song gets us closer to fully awake and ready to face the day. However, this song is still subdued and soft.
4)  “Wonderful Wonderful” by Johnny Mathis. This song with the catchy bass line, background singers, and full tones of the male vocalist still fits with the mood of the preceding three songs but provides transition to the last song.
5)   “Come and Get Your Love” by Redbone. The upbeat, catchy chorus combined with the cheery tone just makes you want to dance. The louder drums, bass, and electric guitar ensure you’re awake and the enthusiasm of the lead singer ensures you feel happy heading into your day.

After listening to these five songs in this order, you’ve effectively switched from tired and reluctant to cheery and motivated.
