Since starting high school, my time to read for pleasure has substantially decreased. Even though I thoroughly enjoy reading, other things like schoolwork and extracurriculars fill the majority of my time. However, over the past year, a few books managed to steal my attention:
-
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (After watching the movie, I decided it was necessary to read the book, as the book is almost always better than the film.)
-
The German Girl by Armando Lucas Correa (Reading The Book Thief put me into a mood for historical fiction which lead me to this book. The author wrote two related stories that switched every other chapter. As I was reading it, I found myself uninterested in the narrative set in the present day. I figured that if I was uninterested in the book, I had no reason to continue reading and stopped half way through.)
-
A collection of Aimé Césaire’s poetry (I ended up skimming it. His poetry confused me - partly because it was translated from French and partly because it was Aimé Césaire.)
-
Une Si Longue Lettre by Mariama Bâ (In order to improve my French skills, I checked out two books in French from the library. After reading the first half over Winter Break, I began to lose momentum once school started back up again. While I didn’t finish it, my French vocabulary improved. Eventually, the library politely asked me to return the book by charging me an “overdue” fee and I returned it before finishing.)
