Blog Post 4 - Delaney

Growing up, my family has always been Catholic. We attend mass every weekend. We celebrate Christmas and Easter. As I’ve gotten older and begun understanding some of the political views of the church, I was told that all abortions are bad – no exceptions.
In youth group, I learned that our goal as Catholics is to get to heaven and to bring as many other people with us as possible. This confused me because, at least to me, religion is a personal thing. So why should I interfere with other people’s religion?
This understanding transfers into the political aspect of my life as well. My political beliefs on abortion differ from those of my religion. I believe that I should not interfere with other people’s choice to abort their child. Although I believe that abortion is wrong and that I could never abort a child, other women have the right to make that decision for themselves. Their decision doesn’t affect me. However, if a pregnant woman were to ask me for advice, I would strongly support continuing the pregnancy.
As I’ve aged, I realized that just because I’m Catholic, I don’t have to agree with every single view or opinion of the church.
