Assignment 5: Nathan Boshard

TV is a good form of entertainment, but generally a waste of time. The only reason that it has gotten so popular is because people have time to waste. This, however leads to advertisers joining the fray to promote their products and give the show the ability to continue. This is, by most accounts, a symbiotic relationship so long as the company doesn’t sell out to the advertisers. I think the most egregious example of this is The Superbowl – 70% ads, 30% football.
It ought to be needless to say that the Nobel Prizes should garner more views than the Emmy’s, yet actors manage to capture the admiration of the masses more than scientists. The Nobel Prizes highlight the greatest scientific discoveries and recognize those responsible; the Emmy’s award entertainers for being outstanding entertainers. The Emmy’s are fairly harmless, but they don’t deserve to more popular than the Nobel Prizes. I find it particularly sad that people care more about those they see on screen than the those who make the world run.
