I have a couple dream schools in mind: George Washington, Vanderbilt, Emory… The list keeps growing. Sadly, all options make
my parent’s wallets cry.
All three schools have rigorous, well-respected academic programs.
Their location in big cities (Washington DC, Nashville, and Atlanta) offers a
great balance between work and play. Can you imagine taking a test in the
morning, then going to see a concert in Nashville in the afternoon? In addition,
these big cities offer amazing internship opportunities, like with the CDC in
Atlanta and the many nonprofits located in Washington DC. It’s important to me
to get hands on experience while in college; not only does it look good on a
resume, but it helps you decide what you enjoy doing. Ending up in a job I hate
is my worst nightmare, and internship opportunities gives you the firsthand
experience needed to choose a career.
Currently my career plans are murky. I’m interested in healthcare,
but I also find international relations fascinating. Lately I’ve been searching
for ways to combine these passions and found careers involving travel
healthcare, global public health research, and nonprofit work. But all these
idea are fluid; I’m not naïve enough to think that what I want now will be what
I always want. That’s why one of my college requirements is a big school, with
diverse major options. A big school is likely to have a larger variety of
opportunities available for me.
