On the precipice of adulthood, I fear the many impending life-altering decisions that will determine the rest of my future. The rational part of my brain understands that I have the potential to be happy doing so many different things, but the panic-inducing part believes that there is one perfect path for me and that if I don't abide by it, I will be miserable. But I have to ignore my own thoughts and follow my intuition. Who it comes to picking a college, I have a general idea to what I am looking for; my career path on the other hand, is a different story. I have visited several colleges, big and small, including: Vanderbilt, Furman, University of South Carolina, University of Virginia, Washington and Lee University, Centre University, Richmond University, Tulane University, Birmingham Southern, and obviously the University of Kentucky. Believe it or not, I have plans in the works to visit even more.
Through my travels and research, I created a check-list of some things I'm looking for at my perfect university:
- I like the idea of small class sizes, in which you can develop personal relationships with your professors.
- An academic environment where students are serious about their studies, but also have good balance between work and play.
- Diverse majors so I have options and the ability to discover different paths if I see fit.
- A medium/smaller size (This is probably the most flexible qualifications I have.)
- A fun environment surrounding the campus
- Sports teams (don't have to be division 1)
- Strong campus community and lots of student involvement in clubs, greek life, sporting events, etc.
- Opportunities such as study abroad programs, internships, and research projects easily accesible.
- SCHOLARSHIP
And the list goes on. Thankfully, I am fortunate enough to be picky about my college choice, and am able to consider many different options. So next year, when I conclude the immense process that is college decision making, I know that I will make the right choice for myself.
