Assignment 4: Joseph Craven

My choice for my huge change in an idea is not some major life-altering revelation. I'm not writing about a change in belief in something as big and serious as politics or religion. Rather, I'm going back to when I was 4 years of old, at which point I thought my dad had magical powers.

We all believed in something such as Santa or the Easter Bunny at one point where, looking back now, you can't believe that you used to believe in it. While I, at one point, believed in all of the above, I also believed that my dad could lift my garage door with the simple phrase, "open sesame!" As a little kid, this completely blew my mind. For years, I was genuinely convinced my dad could move objects at will. However, around the time I turned 5, I began to grow skeptical. I noticed that my dad suspiciously had his arm behind his back whenever he did this, almost like he was holding the garage door opener behind his back. One day, I had a friend stand behind my dad when he did this to confirm my suspicions and, surprise surprise, I was right.

This may seem like a very insignificant moment. After all, I was bound to find out that he was tricking me after a while. However, looking back on this, it has more significance than I initially thought. It was one of the first times when I really thought critically about something and questioned something that my parents did.
