Junior year was awesome, actually. I had assumed homework
would be killer and that the extracurricular would ramp up as we tried to fill
in gaps on the Common App – and both assumptions were 100% correct. APUSH unit
assignments and the nightly Calc workload overwhelmed me, and my commitment to extracurriculars
like Book Club and Bluegrass Youth Sustainability Council ate tremendously into
my spare time. But junior year came with a saving grace: my car. My glorious,
glorious car.
I had underestimated the freedom driving brings,
only considering it a step in saving my parent’s time and my energy. But my Prius
allowed me to increase my after-school commitments without increasing my
stress, as I was suddenly in charge of my schedule. But more importantly,
having a car and knowing I had the
ability to go anywhere I wanted allowed me to reconnect with old friends whose
crazy schedules mimicked my own. I feel like this has been a year of
reconnecting with neighborhood friends, middle-school friends, family friends,
and even extended family, which frankly renders the stress of the year null.
Take this weekend, for example. This weekend is awful. I’ve got Calculus homework, Physics Web Homework, and Arabic
quiz for which I’m two units behind (part of my summer study abroad), and these
blog posts. My horse, apparently, has a back problem caused by my saddle, even
though I’ve ridden in the saddle for a year and a half now, and we have a show
next week. I’ve got to decide how to send out a survey for a BYSC project, and how
to get teenagers to come to a “Belonging Dinner” over the summer to discuss
Town Branch Park. On top of all this, I’m cramming for the AP Physics test. But
it’s all ok, because I’m seeing my friends tomorrow, I Skyped my cousin again
last night, and I went to the neighborhood Derby Party today. To sum up junior
year: high stress, lots of effort, but great friends that make it worth it.
