Music has always been really important to me, be it listening to it or playing it myself. I didn't really start playing guitar until halfway through my freshman year. When I did, it wasn't like I sat down and suddenly went "Ha-Ha!" I really was terrible and I didn't understand how you taught yourself how to play something like that.
Then over that summer, I picked the instrument up again, and started doing the same thing I had been doing, but with more rigor and more discipline. That started me on the road I'm still on today, and it really helps me focus. I can apply the amount of discipline required for creating music to other stuff, primarily as of late, school. Granted, solving a math problem isn't exactly like writing a riff, but the pieces are the same.
I don't think that I may ever be good enough to make music a career, and I can accept that. But its always something I can fall back on if I'm stressed out or in need of some peace of mind, and that is good for me, considering that I'm a junior and this year is more stressful than any other.
