Assignment 5- Richie Lane

I watch TV for what I imagine to be the same reason an overwhelming majority people watch it: to entertain me when I'm bored. I know that sounds boring and basic, but I'm not a person who reads too much into television; I typically watch sitcoms that I only have to half pay attention to while I'm doing homework or trying to fall asleep. Of course, sometimes, I'll watch TV for the sake of being informed, like watching the news or documentaries on topics that interest me.
As for why the Emmy's have so much "glitz and attention" while the Nobel prizes get thrown under the rug, I think the reason is pretty obvious: people are obsessed with celebrities. Not to say that if you watch the Emmy's you are automatically a shallow person, but I think that a lot of people watch the Emmy's for kinda shallow reasons. they watch the Emmy's to see what certain celebrities are wearing, or to see if that drama between actor A and actress B is going to be instigated by the fact that they are sitting at the same table. The Emmy's are also filled with all kinds of high-end props and a beautiful venue, and many people like to watch and fantasize about being there with all the A-listers. One of the big reasons the Nobel Prizes don't receive as much attention is the intelligence of the whole thing. You don't have to be a genius to get the jokes Steve Carrell makes at the Emmy's, but you do have to have a certain level intelligence to understand what Quantum Mechanics are, or why this guy just won an award for it. And, frankly, most people don't have a clue what Quantum Mechanics are, or why they are important. At least, I sure don't.
